How to Achieve Long-Term Results Even with Conservative Treatment of Periodontists:
Case Studies from the Practice of a Dental Hygienist

Jana Norkin

The lecture focuses on achieving long-term sustainable, functional, and aesthetic results in patients with advanced periodontitis. It presents approaches for working with patients who were initially lost to follow-up and how to successfully re-engage them through re-motivation, systematic re-evaluations, appropriate therapy, and a firmly structured recall program.
Using real case studies, the lecture highlights the effectiveness of the most demanding yet crucial step in the work of a dental hygienist – the re-motivation and re-instruction of a repeatedly educated patient. It will also present highly meticulous subgingival therapy using the MINST technique, performed with minimal need for repetition and with respect for the biological value of the tissues. The entire approach is based on a physiological and comprehensive understanding of the periodontium as a functional unit. The lecture includes practical tips for managing complex cases, decision-making algorithms for daily practice based on AAP and EFP protocols, strategies for working under magnification, and ergonomic recommendations. Special attention will be given to the role of micromechanics of hand instruments, essential instrument selection and preparation, and the personal dimension of treatment – because it is the patient’s relationship with the therapy that ultimately determines whether the result is not only achievable but also sustainable.
